The faculty was opened at the Shymkent State Pedagogical Institute in 1966. In 1996, during the reconstruction of higher educational institutions in South Kazakhstan, the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports was opened at the South Kazakhstan Humanitarian University named after M. Auezov based on the merger of the Institute of Physical Education and Sports, the Shymkent Pedagogical Institute and the Institute of Pedagogical Culture.
The head of the faculty was Denchik D.V. for the first years, and from 1970 to 1982 as the dean of faculty was d.p.s , professor Saparbayev M.B.

In 2012 4 student sportsmen participated in the London Olympic games: E.Shalygina in weightlifting, A. Podryadova in judo, A. Mishchuk in shooting, N. Mamaev in taekwondo.
In 2016, student Zhazira Zhapparul became the silver medalist of the Olympic Games in Rio, Kairat Eraliev (boxing), Sabina Ashirbaeva (rhythmic gymnastics), Elizaveta Korol (shooting), Dmitry Koblov (athletics) also performed well at the Olympics.

In 2012, Zhazira Zhapparkul became the world champion in weightlifting in Guatemala, and in 2014 and 2015 she became the silver medalist of the World Championships and won a license for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, MSIC Zhanbota Aldabergenova became the silver medalist of the World Cup and won the European Cup in freestyle (2016. ), MSIC Yerzhan Abilda became the world champion in arm wrestling (Brazil, Sao Paolo). At the end of 2015, the MSIC in taekwondo Nursultan Mamayev became the best taekwondo fighter on the planet and the champion of the World Universiade in 2015. In 2017, at the World Universiade in Almaty, Zhanbota Aldarbergenova became the Champion and bronze medalist, and Zhibek Arapbayeva became the silver medalist of the World Universiade in freestyle skiing for the first time in the history of the country in this sport. Zhanbota Aldabergenova performed well at the 2018 Olympic Games and reached the super final.

The department "Physical education for economic, legal and agricultural specialties" was founded in 2006.
Currently, the department is headed by c.p.s., Associate Professor I.T. Mustafaev.
